The Wines Route of Kakheti

During this tour, we will discover Kakheti - the main wine region of Georgia. It is considered the center of viticulture and winemaking. The production and development of about 500 types of wine, which are the result of the sunny weather, fertile lands, green valleys of this region and surely the hard work of Georgian farmers. Together with our guides we will travel to this traditional region, in order to visit six vineyards situated in different cities and villages. Also, we will enjoy tasting traditional types of wines called "Kvevri", as well as, European, white, red and black wines made from typical grape varieties.

ITINERARY


Day 1        Tbilisi
Arrival at Tbilisi Airport, transfer to the hotel, check-in, leisure time.

Day 2        Tbilisi City Tour
At 09:00 meeting with the guide in the lobby of the hotel.
This day will be dedicated to the discovery of the Georgian Capital - Tbilisi, particularly the "Old City". We will pass by the paved streets in order to see the houses with verandas and wooden balconies. The trip will continue to the next sightseeing, which is Metekhi Church - the former residence of Georgian kings. Afterwards, we will stroll through the Abanotubani district "Bath district", where lots of sulfur baths are situated. It will be the time to have some rest and enjoy a local tasty dish. Later, we will proceed on to the Narikala Fortress, which is one of the most ancient constructions in Tbilisi. Also, we will have a visit to Sioni Cathedral of the 5th – 6th centuries, as well as, the Anchiskhati Basilica of St. Mary Church, dating back to the 6th century.
Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight in Tbilisi.

Day 3        Tbilisi – Ikalto – Alaverdi – Napareuli – Gremi – Telavi
After the breakfast, we will depart to Kakheti - the main wine region of Georgia. Here, we will visit the Ikalto Monastery. Later, we will head for Alaverdi Monastery, founded in the 11th century by the Assyrian monk Joseph. Formerly, Alaverdi Village was a pagan religious center dedicated to the Moon. The trip will proceed to Napareuli Village, where the wine cellar “Twin” and its museum are situated. It is devoted to present the traditional winemaking process. Also, we will enter Kvevri - the decorative two-story building. Here, we will enjoy tasting the traditional wine in the cellar and museum. Afterwhile, we will visit the royal residence and the Gremi Castle, dating back to the 16th century. It is the only architectural monument which has survived since 16th-17th centuries when the city was the capital of the Kakheti kingdom.
In the evening, we will arrive in Telavi, overnight and leisure time.

Day 4        Telavi – Kvareli – Velistsikhe – Signagi
After the breakfast, we will visit the farmers’ bazaar, where we can buy local fruits, homemade wine, special Georgian vodka called “Chacha”, cheese and bread, Georgian sweets called "Churchkhela", among others.
Afterwards, we will head for Kvareli in order to enjoy a pleasant visit to the wine cellar inside a tunnel in the Caucasus Mountains. During the year, the temperature in this tunnel varies from 12-14 degrees. The trip will continue to Velistsikhe, where we will discover the Numisi cellar Museum. It is the most ancient wine cellar in Kakheti, dating back to the 16th century. After an enjoyable tasty wine, we will depart to Signagi City, surrounded by the 18th century wall and 23 defensive fortifications.
This time we will visit the local wine cellar of Kvevri to taste different traditional wine types.
In the evening, we will have an interesting walking tour in the city and overnight at the hotel.

Day 5        Signagi – David Gareja – Tbilisi
Today’s first discovery spot will be Bodbe - the monastery complex of the 9th century, which is considered one of the principal pilgrimage sites in Georgia. Also, here in the monastery, is the tomb of Saint Nino. Next, we will head to David Gareja, an ancient monastery complex. It comprises of 19 monasteries all along with beautiful caves, which is covered with ancient frescoes. We will hike to David Gareja’s Cave to visit the Lavra Monastery, dating back to the 6th century.
Return to Tbilisi, leisure time and overnight.

Day 6        Tbilisi – Mtskheta – Tbilisi
Today will be dedicated to explore Mtskheta, a city-museum inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List. The first stop will be at Svetitskhoveli - the Cathedral of the 11th century, before our visit to Jvari Monastery of the 6th century. We will continue the tour to achieve Mukhrani Castle with winery inside, which was the former royal residence of the 19th century. Here, we will have the opportunity to discover the history and legends of the royal families, as well as, we will visit the wine factory and the vineyards in order to taste delicious wine.
In the evening, we will return to Tbilisi. Leisure time and preparations for departure.

Day 7        Return flight
Transfer to the airport. End of our services.
